‘If You Can Hear Me’ is a touching exploration of childhood innocence threatened by the sudden realisation of adult isolation and mortality. Beautifully shot in the West Country near Bath, the woodland idyll where schoolboy Will and his friends play hide and seek becomes the backdrop to a frightening discovery. This short film explores how a child’s reaction to a tragic event becomes a powerful reminder of the importance of human connection and empathy, and the need to find meaning in the face of difficult truths. Perfectly understated performances from the young lead, and the supporting actors, make this a memorable and thought-provoking film. And a wonderful use of light and the evocative sound of wind in the trees display the film-maker’s clear appreciation of the natural world, which helps prevent the story from sliding too far into darkness. Strongly recommended.

I really liked this movie. A very much needed message. The cinematography is spot on. Sounds of the wind, lighting and camera movements were great and the acting too. I really loved how “we are born in an open field and die in a dark forest” was depicted in the last scene. It fills you with hope. I would recommend it.

A very gentle but poignant look at suicide through the eyes of a young boy. Could be a useful means of introducing matters of life and death to children, as well as exploring the importance and values of friendship and the sense of belonging. I hope to see more sensitive and poetic pieces from this writer director in the near future.
